Roadtrip Edition: Mad Greek Cafe - Baker, CA

Along with Alien Fresh Jerky, I-15 between Barstow and Vegas is bombarded with run-down billboards for the Mad Greek Cafe. A new location recently opened in Primm/Stateline, but since I'd already stopped in Baker for Alien Fresh, I had to make a stop at Mad Greek as well.I thought Alien Fresh Jerky was kitschy...boy was I in for a treat!!!Neon signs, poorly made statues, plentiful Greek flags, words stenciled on the walls, fake plants, blue naugahyde booths. Any cliche you've heard about Greece...all in one diner in the middle of the desert!

I had eaten a breakfast buffet at a casino in Vegas two hours prior, so I wasn't in the mood, nor hungry enough, to spend $10 on a shady-looking Gyro. Instead I opted for a $2 wedge of baklava.

There was absolutely nothing impressive or unique about this baklava. It tasted exactly like the baklava you'd buy on a platter at Costco. The honey stuck to the paper tray it was served in, and the layers of phyllo didn't seem to care to stay in place. It was sweet, and I like baklava in general, but it was downright average.

Nicole Rates It...4/10
