Roadtrip Edition: Alien Fresh Jerky - Baker, CA

Despite my ability to fly for free, sometimes nothing beats a good roadtrip. I drive between Utah and California quite often, and I've done that 600 mile I-15 drive more times than I can count. I occasionally stop in Baker (just about the only town noteworthy between Barstow and stateline) but have never made been to Alien Fresh Jerky. There are numerous billboards between Vegas and LA for this kitschy jerky shop, and this week I decided to check it out for myself.
At the counter, there is an area to sample six different types of their "signature" jerky. Everything from whiskey to carne asada to caffeinated jerky. Most of the flavors were dry and tough, except for the honey teriyaki...moist, sweet, and tangy with a good chewy bite. Along with the jerky, they have a variety of alien-themed olives, sauces, and candy. You can buy astronaut ice cream, nuts, and fresh honey. Not to mention a plethora of green alien toys, t-shirts, hurricane glasses, skulls, and references to Area 51.
At $8 per 4 ounce bag...it's pretty much a rip off. You can go to the gas station next door and get a couple sticks for a buck. Does it bug anyone else that jerky typically costs more than filet mignon?
The most impressive part of the shop was their MASSIVE collection of hot sauces. There had to have been at least 200 varieties, most of which I'd never heard of.
My only caution about Alien Fresh Jerky is the possibility of striking up extraterrestrial romances. My daughter will not stop talking about how great it was to kiss Zarquon.

Nicole Rates it...4/10
